The Lies in the Mirror

“I don’t like my body.  This part’s too big and I’m too short and…”   A list of body-defects followed as we exited the store.  I looked at the young woman beside me.  There was conviction in her voice.  Sadness filled her eyes as she shared what she didn’t like about herself.  What I saw when I looked at her was a contradiction of what she saw when she looked in the mirror.  I saw a woman of beauty.  I couldn’t see the too big or the too short or the many other negative elements she saw in herself.  I saw beauty.   But, I also saw myself.  I could understand...

Last Days of Summer

“You have set all the borders of the earth; You have made summer and winter.”  Psalm 74:17     The scent of basil drifts through the open window.  Fresh-clipped sprigs of it line the basket on the table on my deck.  Thyme and sage are drying in the kitchen, their scents greeting me when I walk into the room.  I love the herbal potpourri that fills my home when it’s time close up my garden for the season.  And despite the warm weather (it’s 95 degrees this afternoon!), summer in Upstate New York is coming to end.   I’ve spent the day snipping and rinsing,...

Greater Than the Grains of Sand

“How precious to me are Your thoughts, God!  How vast is the sum of them!  Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I awake, I am with you.”  Psalm 139:17-18     Do you ever wonder what God sees in you?  Or, what He sees in any of us, really?  I do.  I look in the mirror and wonder “what is there about this face and this personality that makes God think about me?  Who am I, that God would even WANT to think about me?”   You, see I know me.  I’m not a beauty, I’m plain by the world’s standards.  I don’t always think about...

Calm in the Storm

Lightning streaked across the sky.  Thunder rumbled in the distance.  The rain didn’t come, but the humidity rose steadily, promising rain would come.  It was well after two in the morning, but I couldn’t sleep.  Sitting on the living room floor in front of the French doors that lead to my deck, with my terrified dog resting her head in my lap, I watched the seemingly endless lightning flashing through the dark.   What is it about storms that I just have to watch?  I have a good friend who is absolutely terrified of storms.  He was visiting one afternoon when a storm hit.  For...

From Sunrise to Sunset

“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” Psalm 113:3     I don’t witness too many sunrises.  That doesn’t mean that I don’t like to see the sun rise.  It’s an incredible way to start the day.  The truth is – I’m not a morning person.  I don’t sleep well at night.  It’s common for me to see the digits on the nightstand clock change to 2 and sometimes even 3 am.  If I do happen to drift off at a reasonable hour, I will unfailing awaken around midnight and lay in bed, staring at the ceiling until...
