My Gift to Him

Snow blankets the yard.  Icicles hang down from the roof.  Lights twinkle in windows; carols are sung on nearly every radio station.  Trees are decorated, packages are wrapped.  Soon colorful wrapping and bright bows will cover the space under the tree.  I will spend the night anticipating my husband’s reaction in the morning as he rips into those packages.   I love picking out the perfect gift for the ones I love.  I try to be creative and consider more than the price tag (though lately those price tags can cause a coronary!!!)  I like to think about the person and not just the...

The Lies in the Mirror

“I don’t like my body.  This part’s too big and I’m too short and…”   A list of body-defects followed as we exited the store.  I looked at the young woman beside me.  There was conviction in her voice.  Sadness filled her eyes as she shared what she didn’t like about herself.  What I saw when I looked at her was a contradiction of what she saw when she looked in the mirror.  I saw a woman of beauty.  I couldn’t see the too big or the too short or the many other negative elements she saw in herself.  I saw beauty.   But, I also saw myself.  I could understand...

Heart Disease

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”  Psalm 51:10   I have a bad heart.  Medically speaking, I’m perfectly healthy.  My blood pressure is a near-perfect 110/71; my cholesterol is within a normal range; my BMI is a normal 18.  My pulse is steady and regular.  No, medically speaking, my heart is strong and healthy.  My spiritual heart, however, is diseased and weak.  I became acutely aware of this last week and the realization was overwhelming.   One text or phone call from a particular person sends me into a near rage.  (No, it...
