Overflowing with Thanksgiving

Ribbons of sunlight and slight patches of blue push through the clouds.  Gray skies, gusting winds, freezing temperatures, and steady, blowing snow have held me hostage.  Nearly four feet of snow fell in less than 48 hours.  The calendar may still say “Autumn,” but the picture outside my window definitely says “Winter.”  The snow clings to every leafless, barren branch.  The cold bites through layers of clothes.   The sunlight and blue sky, while sparse, are comforting.  I close my eyes and whisper “Thank you, Lord, for the sun and blue sky.”   I open my eyes and...

Running Water

Gurgles and groans shouted from the spout.  I had pumped soap into my hand, turned the handle and expected water.  Instead, it was a series of burps and protests.  I also noticed that the toilet tank wasn’t filling with water.   “Great,” I thought.  “The water isn’t working.” I made my way down to the kitchen, checked the kettle for water and tested it to be sure it wasn’t still hot from breakfast.  Deeming it safe, I used some of it to rinse the soap from my hands.  Only a little, mind you.  I had a few bottles of spring water in the cellar, but other than that,...

David’s Songs of Thanksgiving

“Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, Give to the Lord glory and strength.  Give to the Lord the glory due His name.  Bring an offering and come before Him.  Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!  Tremble before Him all the earth.  The world also is firmly established, it shall not be moved.  Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; and let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”’  I Chronicles 16:28-31    David loved to praise the Lord.  Before he was a king, while he was a lowly shepherd, he was a musician.  He had a heart for the Lord...

Season of Thanksgiving & Giving

We Thank Thee By: Ralph Waldo Emerson (Stanza 3) For this new morning with its light, Father, we thank Thee. For rest and shelter of the night, Father, we thank Thee For health and food, for love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends, Father in heaven, we thank Thee.   It shouldn’t be difficult to write about Thanksgiving.  I close my eyes and consider the holidays past.  I see our family gathered around the table, each member eating more than a normal human eats in a week, laughing at each others jokes, feeling the absence of those no longer with us.  I can feel the...

A Grateful Heart

I can already smell the turkey roasting in the oven, the stuffing swelling out of it as it bakes.  The banana bread will be cooling on the counter next to the pies and the pumpkin roll.  My good china will be taken out and cleaned, the table covered with plates of nuts and olives and cheeses.   “Mom, don’t forget to make some extra drumsticks,” Daniel will remind me (I haven’t been able to find a turkey with six legs yet, so he has to be content with the ones I get from the butcher.)  He and Reid would eat 10 drumsticks if we had them.   “You are making green bean...
