Clean the Lenses!

My car is ten years old and has 126,000 miles on the engine.  It runs great, has had no major problems.  The body is starting rust (Northern New York winters take a major toll on a car’s body); the clear-coat is cracking and peeling, but under the hood, it still runs great. Recently, we were driving home after dark and noticed that the headlights weren’t shining as brightly as they should.  “Must have a bulb out,” my husband said.  He turned on the high-beams and saw a deer on the shoulder of the road.  If he hadn’t turned on the high-beams, we probably would have hit the deer...

The Table

Sawdust filled the air, tickling my nose.  I tried not to sneeze, but I couldn’t hold it in.   “Ah-ah-ACHOO!”  Dust flew all over the little workshop.  “Sorry, Daddy,” I said quietly as my Dad looked up from his work at my dust-covered face.  He knew how much I disliked dirt and dust and that I absolutely hated to get dirty.  But, there I was in the shop, watching my Dad.   “Are you sure you want to be out here?  It’s only going to get worse,” he said to me as he watched me wiggle and squirm to keep from sneezing again.   “I know, Daddy.  I still want...

Heart Disease

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”  Psalm 51:10   I have a bad heart.  Medically speaking, I’m perfectly healthy.  My blood pressure is a near-perfect 110/71; my cholesterol is within a normal range; my BMI is a normal 18.  My pulse is steady and regular.  No, medically speaking, my heart is strong and healthy.  My spiritual heart, however, is diseased and weak.  I became acutely aware of this last week and the realization was overwhelming.   One text or phone call from a particular person sends me into a near rage.  (No, it...

Touching Many

Touching Many

Three thousand people saved – in one day, in one place, through the bold words of one man of God. Not in one year or over many miles or through several missionaries – one day, one place, one man of God! How incredible! It gets better. The man of God speaking with bold authority wasn’t Elijah or Moses, but Peter! Peter – the rough and tough, the fisherman with the reputation for angry outbursts, the disciple who denied Christ three times. The same Peter that Christ spoke to after the resurrection, “Do you love me Peter?” three times asked. Three times Peter proclaims “I do Lord!” “Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep, Peter,” Christ forgives and commissions him.
